Kate, please tell us about a favourite piece...
I love my papercuts of the Moon. I make a few different versions as open editions.
What is it that you love about this piece?
I enjoy the layers of subtle colours as they work so well together to create the light and shadows of craters and the lovely roundness of the moon.
How did it come about?
I had an opportunity to look at the moon through a pretty good telescope a few years ago and found it completely mesmerising. I couldn't believe the amount of detail that was visible and it looked so delicate with beautiful soft, subtle tones. Unfortunately there were other people waiting so I had to move on, but I decided to create my own from paper.
What approach did you take to making it?
I really enjoy making the moon as it's a slightly different process to making my landscape and architectural papercuts. I use all of the pieces I cut out from each layer to make one moon and all of the remaining pieces to make another, so I create two different versions from one papercut. It's very slow, intricate work but the end results are worth the effort!
How have other people responded to it?
People find it really fascinating as initially they think it's a print or a painting but as you get closer you can see the layers and the details. I really enjoy seeing people peering closely at them and sometimes I'm able to show two versions together so it's possible to see how they relate to each other. I'll always remember the 10-year-old boy who bought one of my moons with money he had earned over lockdown holding plant sales in his driveway.
